Santa's little helpers
Looking back looking forward
Over the last few years, with the oldies getting older, and wishing to see their other half, the pool of RO's has been in decline.

Danger levels have not been reached yet but it's nice to get new blood in to help the old ones work their magic. To that end over the last few years RO's who have give up their spare time to help others shoot, have been getting food and accommodation for free to help with their costs, this started with just the Saturday and Sunday but has now gone to the hole time that you are shooting at Bisley so shooting your own competitions Thursday Friday with an independent RO that normally will shoot on the Saturday or Sunday along with the rest of the competitors. We pay the same entry fees as anyone else, so look to have the same shooting time.
Brian Thomas deputy director of shooting for the NSC has been working hard to give back to the RO's a big thank you for all your help the first and biggest is the RO bash at the Phoenix, which when I was range master and helping organize the ranges with RO's, I was having the help of some 120 RO's, It's also a free night out for the RO's.

I'm now retired from the job but, I would like to say thank you all that helped me out at the time your helpfulness made the job that much easier.

But it's the Christmas shoot I wish to write about and yes I know its no where near Christmas hence the title looking forward looking back and anyway, for those that know me, I never could do anything normally. Again this is a thank you from Brian to the RO's, this year it's on the 5th of December or just look on www.galleryrifle.co.uk for the dates if you forget, along with the other shoot's that can be found on the dairy page and like the years gone by it's free to RO's, but anyone is welcome to join in the Christmas festivities well it's nearly free, two pound entry fee's, per competition and you can enter as many times as you wish, but its only your top score to account so, "that will break the Christmas bank"!!, the meal doe's cost if your not an RO I'm afraid. Christmas food in the form of a lunch and dinner are free, the food this year was excellent, as was the fancy dress. Brian has gone to the NSC and got a budget for this so I think it's the god of your choice given right to come and shoot the shoots and eat the food.
Fancy dress on and off the range has been getting better each year, Jane Shields has excelled each year, I note that she is now dragging Terry down with her. For all the stalker's out there you can now be a Christmas tree a tad awkward to shoot in but Steve does a good job of it.
Course of fire, these change slightly each year to keep it interesting for all, I had a bad experience because, I did not read the course or fire correctly in the pots and pan shoot or should I say Morné as he did the range brief. Think I was doing some of that after the shoot. It has something to do with cold Brussels-sprouts and eating them. So ladies I said I would find a way to get you back, so Sally and Sally the ladies of ascot or what I said at the time BAD BAD LADIES if you see them at Bisley some time you have my permission to say that I said they were bad bad ladies.
Running deer played host to this year a running deer at full mover speed, which makes a difference in the lead I can tell you so your mover-mounts will not help for this shoot
Speed steels are always good fun, along with the overlay shoot! A, A3 festive picture is place for you to shoot at but with no scoring zones so it's up to chance who gets the best score. Also, and I like this idea you can only win one competition, so everyone gets a chance to win, if you do win more than one comp you have the choice, of the prize you have or you can exchange it for another prize depending on what you like best your other prize then goes back onto the table and the person that was second gets called up we have managed to get down to 20th place, to find a winner, for electronic ear defenders, a big hamper, free bar for the evening, wines, free entry's to GRAW,
Finally the log chop reactive shooting at it's best and against the clock with teams of four shooting for the prize of one hundred and sixty pounds. I will quote, as I know it will remind peter watts not to say it next year. " John that's just a fluke your never do that again" so team Jane's Baubles had a re-shoot and shaved 1.3 seconds off the original time, what you say now Peter!!
